'You say it best, when you say nothing at all...'
Yes, it’s a classic, and it’s probably swimming around your head right now, bringing up scenes of the late 1990s and of Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in Notting Hill. But have we got more to thank Ronan Keating for, than bringing this iconic song into our lives? Let’s see…
It’s got me thinking of all the myriad of un-spoken, un-uttered, and un-voiced aspects of our experiences, thoughts, and feelings and how much space they actually inhabit.
Thinking of this in a visual way, it reminds me of the use of negative space in art. Here’s a brilliant example of this in action in Jennifer Whitten’s work.
We can see how the very thing that is not depicted, the thing that is left out, actually holds the space and the power of this portrait. The sense of loss, and notion of absence that the artist conveys is palpable.
So how does this emerge in our everyday lives, our conversations with others, and with ourselves? What are we not saying, what are we not looking at, that is taking up space inside us?
It highlights to me the power that having coaching conversations can have in revealing these hidden aspects of our lives. Having another person to hear you, to listen to what is not being said, and to evoke awareness of yourself as a whole, can be truly transformative.
So, I think you hit the nail on the head Ronan! What other gems of wisdom are hiding the 1990s classics!?
